Juliénas "Les Capitans" – Trenel originates from the village of the same name in the Beaujolais region—the northernmost of the 10 Crus—which, according to local legend, was named after... Julius Caesar! Established in 1938, this appellation accounts for just 4% of total Beaujolais production; the terrain features steep slopes ranging from 230 to 430 meters in altitude, offers great soil diversity, and benefits from excellent sun exposure. "Les Capitans" is one of the region's most significant climats, characterized by granite and clay soils.
Vinification is carried out using indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, 50% of the production matures for 12 months in older barrels (3–7 years old), while the remaining 50% ages in stainless steel tanks.
The nose is complex, offering aromas of black fruits—such as black cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant—alongside notes of cinnamon, licorice and tobacco. It has medium body—unusual for wines from the Beaujolais region—with robust yet rounded tannins. On the palate, black fruit and spice flavors dominate, accompanied by mineral notes and a long aftertaste.
The ideal serving temperature for Julienas "Les Capitans" – Trenel is 14–16°C, and its aging potential is 8–12 years.
It pairs perfectly with red meats, game, duck, mushroom dishes, and soft cheeses.
