It’s a process that allows us to unlock the character of each bottle and understand what we truly enjoy. If you’re just beginning your journey into the world of wine, this guide from winebox.gr will help you by following the 4 basic steps.
1. Appearance (Look at it)
Before even bringing the glass to
your nose, observe its contents.
Color: Hold the glass by the stem (not the bowl, to avoid warming
the wine) and tilt it slightly over a white surface. Is it clear or cloudy? Is
there sediment? All of these elements matter—though not necessarily as
something good or bad. It depends on the wine style, grape variety, and aging.
Transparency: Can you see through to the other side of the glass, or is
the color so dense (especially in red wines, e.g. Malbec) that it’s opaque?
White wines can range from pale, transparent hues with green highlights
(indicating freshness), to straw yellow, all the way to amber, suggesting
maturity and aging.
In red wines, intense purple highlights often indicate youth, while deep
brick-red tones suggest age.
2. Aroma (Smell it)
Our nose is the most powerful
“advisor” when it comes to taste.
Swirling: Gently swirl the wine in the glass. This helps oxygen
release the aromas.
First inhale: Place your nose inside the glass and take a deep breath.
What does it remind you of? Fruits (lemon, strawberry, peach)? Flowers? Or
perhaps spices and wood (if the wine has been aged in barrels)?
There is no wrong answer—everyone’s sense of smell is unique!
3. Taste (Try it)
Now it’s time for that long-awaited
sip.
Technique: Don’t swallow immediately. Let the wine move around your
mouth so all your taste buds are activated.
What we look for:
Sweetness: Felt on the tip of the tongue.Acidity: That sense of
“freshness” that makes your mouth water (especially prominent in white wines).
Tannins: The drying sensation on the gums (a hallmark of red wines).
Body: Is the wine light like water, or rich and creamy like milk?
4. Finish (Evaluate it)
After swallowing, stay focused for a
few seconds.
Length: How long does the flavor remain in your mouth? A quality
wine usually has a long finish.
Conclusion: The most important question is: Did you like it?
The balance among all these elements is what makes a wine truly special.
Tips for the perfect tasting at
home:
Temperature matters: Don’t over-chill white wines, and don’t serve red wines too
warm.
The right glass: A tulip-shaped glass helps concentrate aromas.
Experiment: Don’t stick to the same choices. Explore the vast selection
at winebox.gr and try different varieties to train your palate.
Cheers!
